Canada is a nation built on polite disagreement, but a new debate is threatening to shake the very foundations of our culinary identity: Does ketchup belong on poutine?
Nothing can shake the holy trinity of fries, squeaky curds, and brown gravy; it’s an untouchable classic; a massive social media surge suggests that the “red sauce” revolution is well underway with people adding Heinz Ketchup to shake up a classic masterpiece. I am personally on the fence about this one but also intrigued.

 A Nation Divided
The debate caught fire recently on Instagram and TikTok, where Heinz leaned into the controversy. The results were immediate and large in numbers, racking up over a million views and sparking a comment section war of the new twist on a Canadian classic.
While some fans labeled the combo as fire or admitted they weren’t “mad about it,” others suffered a full-blown identity crisis, asking the philosophical question: Is it even still poutine once the ketchup hits the gravy? I think the beauty of a poutine is customizable to the eater and it’s ok to be different. Trying something new isn’t always a bad thing.
According to recent data, the Canadian public is surprisingly split:
41% are proudly “Team Ketchup”
30% offer a hard “Absolutely not”
29%Â are currently sitting on the fence, likely waiting for their next snack break to decide.
To be honest I am part of that 29 percent. I might take the red challenge and see officially where I stand.
Heinz Picks a Side
National Poutine Day is just around the corner on April 11th. This is the perfect time to try something new with a twist to our favourite Canadian comfort food. Let’s be honest most of us love Ketchup so this might be a winning combination. I am definitely going to give it a try.
